Fall furnace checklist for Beaumont homes

Before the first cold night, change the filter, test your CO alarms, clear space around the furnace, check the thermostat and run the heat for 15 minutes.

That fall furnace checklist takes about 30 minutes and needs no tools. If anything looks or smells wrong, stop and call a heating pro.

Do it yourself

Fall furnace checklist: seven checks to do yourself

Most heaters here sit idle from spring to fall. A short checklist in October finds small problems while it's still warm outside. What should you check first? Start at the top and work down.

  • FilterSlide it out and hold it to a light. Gray and furry means replace it. Match the size printed on the frame.
  • CO alarmsPress the test button. Put one near bedrooms and replace dead batteries.
  • Clear the areaKeep boxes, paint and cleaners at least 3 feet from the furnace and water heater.
  • ThermostatSet it to HEAT and the fan to AUTO. Put in fresh batteries if it has them.
  • Vents and registersOpen them, and move rugs and furniture off the grilles.
  • Outside ventLook for nests, leaves or debris near the furnace vent. Never cover it.
  • Test runTurn the heat up and let it run 15 minutes. Listen for banging, squealing or a burning smell that doesn't fade.

Smell a little dust burning off the first time? That can be normal and should fade within the hour. A smell that stays, or any gas smell, is different. For gas, leave and call 911 and SoCalGas.

Not a weekend job

Fall furnace checks best left to a heating pro

Some parts of a furnace tune-up need meters and training. Here is what to leave alone.

ItemWhy it needs a pro
Cleaning the flame sensor and burnersMeans opening gas and electrical parts
Testing the ignitor and gas valveNeeds a meter and gas training
Checking the heat exchangerA crack is a CO risk and needs real proof
Testing capacitors and motorsStored electricity can shock you
Reading CO levels at the ventNeeds a combustion or CO tester

Our furnace tune-up page explains what a fall visit includes, and furnace diagnostics covers the deeper tests. Ask your technician to explain what they plan to check, and verify their license at cslb.ca.gov.

Local timing

Why October is the month for a furnace check in Beaumont

Beaumont, Cherry Valley (92223), Banning (92220), Calimesa (92320) and Yucaipa (92399) all see the heater start up around the same time. Santa Ana winds can load filters from October on, so read how wind dust affects your furnace and plan a second filter check after the first big gust.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission also recommends CO alarms on every level of the home and outside sleeping areas. Heating season is a good time to test them. SoCalGas publishes its own gas safety guidance.

Booking early helps. Our fall schedule fills up fast, so ask about timing when you call.

FAQ

Fall furnace checklist FAQs

When should I start my furnace for the first time each fall?

Run it for about 15 minutes in October, before the first cold night. That gives you time to spot odd noises, weak airflow or a burning smell that doesn't fade.

A little dust smell at first is normal. If something seems wrong, you'll have days, not hours, to get a heating pro to look at it.

How often should I change my furnace filter?

Check it monthly in winter and replace it when it looks gray. Many one-inch filters last one to three months, but dusty weeks and Santa Ana winds shorten that.

Hold the filter up to a light. If you can't see light through it, put in a new one that matches the size printed on the frame.

Where should I put carbon monoxide alarms?

Put them on every level of the home and outside sleeping areas. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission says interconnected alarms are best, because when one sounds they all sound.

Test them monthly, replace dead batteries, and get everyone outside and call 911 if an alarm goes off.

Is a burning smell normal when I first turn on the heat?

A light dust smell that fades within an hour is usually normal. Dust settles on the burners all summer and burns off at start-up.

A smell that lingers, smells like hot plastic or burning wires, or comes with smoke is not normal. Turn the furnace off and call a heating pro. For a gas smell, leave and call 911.

Can I do my own furnace tune-up?

You can do the simple parts, like the filter, vents and thermostat.

Cleaning the flame sensor, testing the ignitor and checking the heat exchanger need meters and training, since they involve gas and electrical parts.

A qualified provider should handle those, and you can verify their license on the CSLB website.
